SPRAINS versus STRAINS: what's the difference?

Car accident injuries 🚑 can overstetch a ligament - this is called a SPRAIN. The most common soft tissue sprain to occur in a car accident is whiplash, in some cases, tearing of ligaments can occur. When muscles or tendons are injured in a car accident, it is called a STRAIN.

At Physical Therapy & Chiropractic Associates of South Florida we start with relieving acute pain with RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. When your body is  ready for it, we  fight the pain and regain function with careful therapeutic exercises / physical therapy.

Car accidents, slip and fall, overuse, or a bad twist usually affect the neck, back, and knees. When these tissues are injured, they are graded according to the severity of injury:

  • Grade 1 – This is the mildest injury.🤨 Think about a pulled muscle during a workout.
  • Grade 2 – This is a moderate injury. Fibers are partially torn. 😟The joint may actually become loose.
  • Grade 3 – This is a severe. The soft tissue fibers are torn apart. 😭You need emergency medical attention (and likely surgery)!
